Possibly for the first time ever in Dhanusha, Dhanusha Sewa Samiti has publicized its budget in the presence of news reporters and other stakeholders at a publicceremony.
Budget,which was publicized today, had allocated comprised NRS 25 lakh 25 thousand for secured granary, 23 lakh 55 thousand and 8 hundred 45 for Drinking water and 1lakh 24 thousand and 16 for health services.
Mainly the rural northern VDCs of Dhanusha: Tulsi, Bengadawar, Laxminiwas, Naktajhik, Hariharpur, Kisanpur and some villages of Sindhuli district are the working areas of Dhanusa Sewa Samiti.
Founder, Mr. Samir Ghimire expressed his happiness as the organization has been successful in uplifting the life of poor and deprived people. He also assured that the organization would continue its program in more effective ways.
Discussion on use of land for landless Farmers
Janakpurdham, Poush 9As per the initiation of Dhanusha Sewa Samiti, discussion program on providing landless farmers with land, protection of land swept by river by providing them with temporary land for productive farming was held today at Dhanusha Local Development Office hall.
Discussion Program was held at the presence of Chiefs of District forest and agriculture development office, Land and Revenue Office, Land Reformation Office and Land Conservation office along with secretaries of Village Development Committees where the speakers spoke on how the conservation of heath land can be done so that they can be distributed on procedural way.
Forest officers spoke on how the lease forest can be given to landless for 40 years. Similarly,the chiefs of other offices also spoke on how land can be brought in use in procedural way.
Coordinator of Land Concern Committee, Mr. Chitra B. Bik asked VDC secretary for the cost of the land of their villages. President of Dhanusa Sewa Samiti, Mr. Samir Ghimire facilitated the program.
Good Earning from Earthworm Farming

Fewfarmers of Dhanusha have earned good sum from earthworm farming.
Ms. Laxmimaya Gole has claimed that she earns 50000/- a year from earthworm farming.
Amrita Moktan who is incapable of lifting heavy weights has recently bought a new cycle from the money she earned by earthworm farming. She said, “I transport vegetables,in my own cycle.” In Bengdabar VDC of Dhanusa alone, 50 agriculturists have already started earthworm farming.
Farmer sare starting earthworm farming following the training organized by Dhanusa SewaSamiti. They said, waste and dust from household and farms are also well managed by earthworm farming.
Farmersfrom around Biratnagar, Udaypur and Siraha come to our village for earthworms,said Ms. Ghole. She also said, “we have left chemical fertilizer in fruit and vegetables farming and instead start to use organic fertilizer and it’s beneficial too.”
Mr. Magar recalled how the people used to feel while using earthworm for their farming and now the same people are using it. He added, “Earthworm Farming from one side has helped in cleanliness and on other side relieved from the purchase of chemical fertilizer.”
By teaching women earthworm farming, men have gained spare times to do other works too. Insects are known to be the rivals of earthworm. As earthworm farming is done in cow dungs, and wastes sometime insects finishes earthworm.
They said,” vegetables produced by using organic manure are easily sold and well paid in comparison to the vegetables produced by using chemical fertilizer”.
Dhanusa Sewa Samiti by organizing farmers’ in-group is providing them with training on organic manure and earthworm farming. Mr. Samir Ghimire of D.S.S said that farmers with less land are highly benefited by earthworm farming. Mr. Ghimire said,” Chemical fertilizers are expensive as well as harmful to the health, which is the reason behind farmers being attracted to organic manure.”

Chairpersonof group Mr. Devibahadur Raut further said that the vegetables produced byusing chemical fertilizers doesn’t do good to the health of consumers as well,so farmers should switch to traditional method of farming and encourage use ofcompost manure and organic fertilizers.

Aid for the Construction of School’s Infrastructure

Education Office and school management committee constructed the building, as the excessive numbers of students were admitted in the school following the School Admission Campaign. Dhanusa Sewa Samiti provided the financial aid, as the School was facing problem for the management of furniture and windows.

East-west highway blocked

An hour blockade on the highway of Dhalkebar was organized by the Dalit people protesting against the non-Dalit people for not allowing them to enter into the premise of the temple.
Rastriya Bhumi Adhikar Forum, Dhanusha and Dhanusha Sewa Samiti protested against the atrocities perpetuated against the Dalit. Many landless people had gathered and provided the support in the protest.
At evening 1:00 to till 2:00, the protest was held. Many reputed people were supporting the protest.
Lalgadh’s Women on Forest Patrol

Large number of people of our nation are frightened by the word ‘forest’ itself. But,the fact that women are performing daily patrol on forest must be surprising for us. It is OK not to feel surprise; a group of brave women of Dhanusha Lalgadh are patrolling to protect the forest area. On the program organized by Dhanusa Sewa Samiti, those brave women shared their experiences of the patrol. To stop regular theft at Lalgadh Bengadawar Dhaneshwor Woman Community Forest popularly known as Srijana Banbatiika, group started the patrol. Saraswati Khadka of Banbatika told that, “From the time we started our patrolling on forest the stealing of timber has fallen.”
Stealing of woods at day has sharply reduced, said Saraswati. The same Chure Hill, which used to be deserted some five years ago, was turned into greenery by the initiation of women. Various fruit trees, herbs and plants have been planted on the forest area. Women have been conducting large scale patrolling once a month, and small patrolling on weekly basis.
Smugglers held by the patrolling team who we are handed over to Forest Office were released on bribes, said Khadka. The group of women who turned the deserted range into greenery is utilizing good benefits out of it. By selling firewood’s, grass and leafs woman have been earning good sum of money.

Dhanusha Sewa Samiti has informed the different communities about the yearly program andits estimated cost in its working areas.
Organization publicized its program and budget at a program, organized at Janakpur on Sunday. Mr. Samir Ghimire, founder & patron of the organization informed that for the year 2006 Rs 50 lakhs 85 thousand 4 hundred and fifty-five rupees would be spent on Agriculture and Health and Drinking water projects.
Out of total budget of 60 lakhs 85 thousand and 4 hundred fifty-five rupees, only 9lakhs 99 thousand five hundred and four rupees has been allocated for administrative expenses.
Organization has separated 23 lakhs 55 thousand eight hundred and thirty five rupees for drinking water, 25 lakhs 25 thousand for Rights oriented activities, whereas 3lakhs 17 thousand and four hundred rupees is separated for Community based Cooperative, 1 lakh 41 thousand for sustainable agriculture, 1 lakh and 24 thousand 400 hundred and 16 rupees for environment and reproductive health.
With the aim of showing how the funding has been used by DSS, the program was organized.

Womenof Aeswarya Banbatika of Bengdabar VDC Dhanusa have done exemplary work by stopping Ratu river’s crossing.
Aeswarya Banbatika’s members have planted trees and plants at the bank of river, controlling the river’s crossing. Villagers have admired their job and are joyous of it.
Floras planted at the slant are being taken care by the women themselves. Around 40households are involved in Banbatika. Forest area has covered almost 700 meter sand is filled with greenery.
Women collect firewood, grass and swipe plants from the same forest and have become the source of income to some extent. Peoples have encouraged the program as it has conserved the environment and have also become the source of income for many.
Dhanusa Sewa Samiti has led the group. DSS has been providing technical support to this women group, said Santosh Ghimire head of Food Security Enquiry head.
Land Concern Committee Formed

Land Concern Committee has been formed to achieve the land for landless and Dalit farmers and communities. Committee including people of five VDCs has been formed in Bengdabar VDC of Dhanusha, under the chairmanship of Chitrabahadur Biswokarma.
Village level Land Concern Committee has been formed from the representatives of five VDCs; Dhalkebar, Naktajhij, Hariharpur, Bengdabar and Puspawalpur.
In the news received it has been said, the committee has been formed in response to the demand raised by the landless and Dalit communities for land.
The committee has also requested the Government of Nepal to manage suitable land for living and right to land for farming.
The committee has prepared rough data of landless from all over the country and has demanded for land for them.
In the committee so formed, Chitra bahadur Biswokarma has been nominated as Chairperson, Dhanudebi Mahara as Vice Chair Person and Bijay Mahara as Secretary,whereas Sukrabahadur Mijar, Kuthumaya Mijar, Phoodevi Sada, Topbahadur Kumale,Swaman Singh Lama, Ramchandra Mahara, NIrsa Bhujel and Pancha sada were nominated as members of the committee.
The Committee was formed in the active initiation of Dhanusa Sewa Samiti, Mr. Samir Ghimire, founder of the organization.

Founder of Dhanusa Sewa Samiti, Mr. Samir Ghimire handed over the cheque of Nrs. 27000/- at a program attended by Schoolteachers, Parents, and Management Board of school, students and local people.

Major Seven Parties Concerned About The Problems Of Landless People

It has been complained that the government is not concerned about the problems of landless people of Dhanusa district. They have even threatened; if their problems are not solved then it will lead to civil war.
An interview program ‘Landless people’s participation and questions in the constitution’ was organized by National land rights forum with support of Dhanusa Sewa Samiti (DSS) where landless people said that they are forced to be deprived from various opportunities due to landlessness.
Tope Bahadur Kumale from Dhanusa, Naktajhij said that he is not able to fulfill basic needs of family and teach his children because ofnot having own land. He said, “We have a huge problem, and none is listening tous, what we can do by ourselves?” He appealed to political leaders to take their problems seriously and work for it.
In the same way, Gutkumari Mijhal said that she is notable to educate her children because of not having own land. She said, “Neither land, nor education facilities.” Further Bishnu kumari said that they are not getting loan because they don’t have any land paper to present as guarantee.She added that she voted candidate thinking that they would solve their problem but everything was in vain and she has decided not to cast vote anymore.
Samjha devi from Hariharpur-6 said that they are even being thrown out from the area they are living. She voted but no political leader tried to solve their problems.
According to Samir Ghimire from Dhanusa Sewa Samiti, six thousand people are landless from five VDC’s of Dhanusa district: Hariharpur, Naktajhij, Puspalpur, Bengadawar and Dhalkewar.
Participants of the program kept their demand forward for loan in low interest without need of any guarantee papers, land for safe livelihood, and land for cultivation, proper management of public land and employment opportunity for all. At the end, major parties have agreed to hold a meeting addressing the problems of landless people of Dhanusa district within few days and request government for aid in written form.
Increasing Attraction Toward Improvised Stove

Local people of northern Dhanusa district have shown their interest toward smoke free improvised stove.
A research has shown that increasing number of improvisedstove users in VDC area of the district have increased people’s interest in it.A social organization, ‘Dhanusa Sewa Samiti’ is providing training and needed equipment for the construction of improvised stove to the people of rural areas.
On an interview by Daily Janakpur, president of the organization Mr. Samir Ghimire has said that users of improvised stove have been mainly increased in Hariharpur, Naktajhij, Puspalpur, Dhalkewar and Begadawar VDC’s.
Local housewives say that they are more and more attracted to the improvised stove because it consumeless wood than traditional style stove and don’t produce any smoke in the kitchen room.
‘’This stove is wood efficient, smoke free and it decrease risk of fire so we have found it very effective’’ says a housewife Sunita Devi from Naktajhij by showing improvised stove of her house. She also said that other housewives are also interested in the construction of improvised stove. ‘Dhanusa sewa samiti’ is providing stove construction training and training about its use to women in the area.

It has already been three decades since Mr. Debibahadur Raut of Kemalipur-1, Dhalkebar VDC started farming. He earned for himself and his family from the same work. But, due to use of chemical fertilizers he suffered a lot.
After the awareness program on the benefits of organic fertilizer organized by Dhanusa Sewa Samiti, many farmers including Mr. Raut have realized the damaged caused by chemical fertilizers in their health.
At the initiation of Dhanusa Sewa Samiti, around 300 farmers of Dhalkebar, Bengdabar, Naktajhij, Hariharpur and Puspawalpur VDC not only started using organic fertilizers, but are also earning good profit from it.
Laxmi Gole of Dhanusa, Kusumbisauna has already bought tier lorry worth Nrs. 50000/-from the profit earned by selling earthworms. As the farmers of 5 VDCs are actively using organic fertilizers along with producing, additional responsibility has been added to Dhanusa Sewa Samiti to recognize the place as ‘ place of organic fertilizer’.
“Not only do the farmers know about the organic fertilizer, they themselves with their knowledge are producing quality organic fertilizers at their own household”, said Mr. Samir Ghimire of Dhanusa Sewa Samiti. Mr. Ghimire also said that the economic status of farmers has also risen from its use.
Another farmer from the same Kusumbisauna, Mr. Ramdev Mahato is also selling vegetables produced by using organic fertilizer at the market. He said, its ‘gain and gain’ by the use of the organic fertilizer and also thanked Dhanusa Sewa Samiti.
Jagarnath Seth, the head of Agriculture Office claimed,the productivity of the land has increased by the use of organic fertilizer.

Mr. Maha seth said that NRS. 13 lakhs has been allocated for the agriculture in Dhanusa alone. He also expressed his concern on lack of food storage and said that if government encourages farmers by paying appropriate price then the problem will soon be solved. He also argued that, it is due to the high price for production and low for the products, farmers are bearing losses.

On the occasion of 42nd national children’s day, ‘Dhanusa Sewa Samiti’ has donated fifty thousand rupees to Harihar lower secondary school for the purpose of infrastructure development.
Organization Chief, Mr. Samir Ghimire handed the donation amount to school Principal Mr. Dhurba Prasad Upadhaya and chief of school management Mr. Chandreshwor Mahato.
Furthermore, District Education office has distributed school dress to 52 students. Deserving students were gifted with school dress among which 65 were girls and 5 wereboys.
In the same way, Duturapra School and teachers, students and guardians of ward no.9 participated in the program where different games and quiz contest were held. Organization chief of ‘Dhanusa sewa samiti’ said that education is basic need for children in his speech.

The street drama sensitized people to become aware about the newcomers’ coming into the village, right to education for both boys and girls and also sensitized people on the negative effects of drinking alcohol.
Landless Problem Might Give Rise to Another Conflict

The landless people of Dhanusa district protested against government for not listening to their grievances. They said that even after living like a refugeein their own country for ages, if government continues to ignore their problem,than it might lead to another dangerous conflict.
In the program organized by National Right to Land Forum, the landless people claimed that they have been left out of many facilities and benefits just because no land is registered in their own name. Top Bahadur Kumal of Nakatajhig claimed that his children are unable to attend school and lack other fundamental needs because he does not possess any lands.
Another victim of landlessness Gutkumari Mijhar said that the problem of landlessness is quite grave but there is no authority to complain and nothing happens when we talk with neighbours. Similarly, Binakumari said that even loan is given when collateral of land is provided; therefor we are unable to get any. Shefurther said that, she would not give a vote to a person who formerly promised to register the land in her name.
Samjhadevi Mahato of hariharpur demonstrates her anger towards political party candidates,saying that they don’t care for landless people. Nepali Congress leaders, Mr. Ramkrishna Yadav said that there is need to campaign to address the problem of landless people.
Shatrughan Mahato of CPN-UML pointed on the fact that there is need of revolutionary land are formation in the country. The participants of the program claimed that landless people should get loan in low interest rate with no collateral, a land for shelter and agriculture and record of remaining land and one person one employment scheme should be brought forward by government.

Landless people of Dhanusa District were organized for the land rights due to the facilitation of Dhanusha Sewa Samiti.
Dhanusa Sewa Samiti and National Land Right Forum organized interaction program at Janakpurdham, on the topic of ‘Participation of Landless people in Constituent Assembly”.
At the program, leaders from seven parties expressed that landlessness is a severe problem and expressed their commitment towards solving the problem.
Leader semphasized that Government should not take people’s land in the name of land reform, but should provide facility for land pooling, proper irrigation and required seeds distribution.
Speaking at the program, Nepali Congress’s District President Ramkrishna yadav said the landlessness is the national problem, and nation should give proper emphasis to solve this problem.
Similarly, UML party leader Satrudhan Mahato, said that land right must be provided to the deprived and poor people. Samir Ghimire from Dhanusa Sewa Samiti expressed that most of the problem of land will be solved, if only unused land is brought in use.
At the program organized in the chairmanship of National Land Right Forum, Dhanusa President Dhanodevi Mahara, Secretary Kamlesh Das, Ujuri kamri Mijhar Topbahadur Kumale, Syambahadur Biswokarma, and Maheshwor raj Dahal expressed their opinions.

Campaign Against Quality less Fertilizer and Insecticides

Food Security Concern groups of Dhanusa, have started campaigning against the quality less fertilizers and insecticides.
As the beginning of the campaign, the concern group with the help and suggestions from different NGOs has initiated farmers to use reformed traditional way of arming.
Farmer shave said that, after using the reformed traditional way of farming, the soilis gaining back its productivity and the overall production of vegetables has also slowly grown.
Use of fertilizer made out of earthworm farming, organic fertilizer, organicin secticides made out of onion, garlic, chilly and herbs have reduced the cost of production, said Dhanusa’s Food Security Concern Group coordinator DeviBahadur Raut.
Complaint Against The Negative Effect of Insecticide

Farmers from ten VDCs of Dhanusa have complained that use of chemical fertilizer and insecticides in the name of tackling dependency of rain water have further worsen the problem.
At the press meet organized by Food Security Concern Group, farmers complaint that in the name of development, these seeds have been publicized. Farmers said that due to limitation of seeds they are obliged to buy new seeds and use chemical fertilizers that have contributed to unproductive soil.
Farmers from Bengdabar, Dhalkebar, Naktajhih, Hariharpur, Dhanusadham, Sabaila, Umaprempur, Bhutahi Paterba and Govindapur pointed that lately chemicalin secticides are not being effective to insects as well.
They also said that chemical insecticides have severely affected the health offarmers, and they have been suffering from headache, eyes burn, dizziness,joint pain and insomnia.
After the farmers were diagnosed from different problems due to the use of chemical fertilizers,farmers have started to switch into traditional way of farming with the recommendation and consultation from Dhanusa Sewa Samiti.

Women from around 50 household of Aiswariya Banbatika were involved in this campaign.Women are also taking benefits from the trees planted at the riverbank. The plantation has helped in protecting the environment, stopped land sliding and has also added to the financial gain.

Students Failed To Appear In Exam Due To Carelessness Of School

People have encircled Janta Secondary School, Naktajhij as a Dalit student fails to appear in test exam due to the carelessness of School and District Education Offices.
Villagers agitated as the student, son of Ram Gulam Mahara who passed 9thgrade with first division failed to appear SLC pretest exam as the School Administration and DEO failed to register the student’s name in the examiners list.
Dhano Devi Mahara, vice chairperson of local and land right union, Ramkisun Mahato, member of school management committee and other villagers blamed school administration for the incident and also warned that they would lock down the school, if the problem is not solved soon.

Dhanusa Sewa Samiti has been working on the sector of food security and gender equity at five VDCs from the support of donor organization Action Aid. Dhanusa Sewa Samiti has been working at Naktajhij, Hariharpur , Puspawalpur , Bengdabar and Dhalkebar VDCs of Dhanusa. Usha Bhandari of DSS who has been working on the sector of gender equality shared the problems and the possible solution in working with gender equality. Ms. Bhandari further added that, at the working zone of DSS woman have started using family planning measures, children are going school, and women are demanding equal rights as men.
DSS’s food security concern committee head Santosh Ghimire talked about the achievements made by the organizations in the sector. Dhanusa Sewa Samiti today reviewed its work in the presence of representatives of different organizations, reporters, and other social workers.

Gold is Cultivated in land full of Sand and pebbles by Mushahars

Farmers of Dhanusa District are highly motivated to use both chemical and organic manure after the significant rise in productivity. Farmers after being encouraged by Dhanusa Sewa Samiti to use pesticides and insecticide are even more motivated to use these while farming and there is significant rise in the productivity of the crops.
The use of chemical as well as organic manure has led to variation in taste and even had brought customers to buy those crops. People of Mushahar community of Puspabalpur village ward no.3 says that they have cultivated the waste land covered with sand and pebbles to grow crops which has directly benefited them and have also aided in significant rise in living standard.
According to them, in average one individual is earning about more than 30 thousands from the cultivation of crops like maize, beans, walnuts and other vegetables as well. Mushahar have been successful in cultivation in the wasteland caused by drying of river after removing of sands and pebbles.
Dhanusa Sewa Samiti at initial phase started an organization by donating 8 thousand rupees and encouraged the mushahar people to cultivate the dry land which has now became main source of living to them.
About1 hundred and 55 people are directly benefited from this and have now main source of income and living. According to the Founder Chairperson of Dhanusa Sewa Samiti, Mr. Samir Ghimire “there has been significant downfall in the rate of malnutrition in children after Mushahar has started using these lands as their source of living.”
Fekuwa Sada, one of the reputed people in Mushahar community claimed that he has now 30 thousand rupees income annually and similar case was with Surtiya Sada who said that she was able to earn 25thousand rupees from vegetable and crops cultivation.

During the General Assembly of Drinking water and Sanitation Customers program, the founder chairperson of Dhanusa Sewa Samiti, Mr. Samir Ghimire handed check of Rs.75000 to the chairman of Drinking Water and Sanitation Program Mr. Jhalak Bahadur Khadka.
The Drinking Water project has benefited about 1 hundred and 86 household including one school. “Forestry Department has also granted over 75 thousand rupees and has provided local resources and labors amounting up to NRs. 2 lakhs for the establishment of drinking water project,” said the Food Rights chief person Santosh mani Ghimire of Dhanusa Sewa Samiti.
Wage Protest Raised Wages of Mushahar’s

The conference, which was organized by Dhanusha Sewa Samiti (DSS), recognized that the natural resources and materials are the common property of all mankind andevery individual has the right to use and own the land. Land is vital for the survival to the poor and marginalized groups like Dalit.
Every Individual by the virtue of being a citizen of a nation has the right to acquire the citizenship in easy and accessible manner. The conference emphasized on the domestically and universally accepted standard that every individual is equal and no one should be discriminated on the basis of caste,race, region, class or sex. Conference held that no on should be subjected to any kind of defamation or torture of any kind.
The conference strongly condemned the different kinds of violation and discrimination like untouchability, blockade, assault and practices to force Dalit community to leave their land. The conference swore that all should be united to fight against these kinds of injustice and punish the culprits.
The conference acknowledged that the constitution has curtailed the rights of landless people and have empowered the land mafias. The constitution should therefore be amended to empower the landless people that can provide them land.
